Esports Journalist of the Year-2022 Update

Please find below a statement by Bryce Blum, President of the Esports Awards panel, explaining the changes made to the Esports Journalist of the Year category in September 2022.

The primary goal of the Esports Awards is quite simple: to recognize and celebrate the most outstanding individuals and businesses in their respective fields.
While we constantly strive to reach this end, the esports industry is constantly evolving and, despite our best efforts, we don’t always get it right. With that said, we are always listening, learning, and improving.

After receiving feedback from the community that the nominees for the Esports Journalist of the Year failed to include some of this year’s most impactful journalists, the leadership subcommittee of the decision-making panel conducted additional research, debated internally, and ultimately recommended to add three new finalists to this year’s Esports Journalist of the Year category. This recommendation was then ratified by a vote of the entire judging panel. These finalists have been announced on September 26, 2022.

While we recognize that it is late in the game to be adding nominees to this category, we don’t want the process to stand in the way of celebrating the extraordinary efforts of individuals that have contributed so much to our space. In 2023, we will look to improve our processes by incorporating feedback from recognized bodies and professionals as part of the selection process for this and other categories where we can use additional input.

The Esports Awards are an ever growing, evolving and dynamic platform. We appreciate your patience, input, and support as we look to make the Esports Awards the best they can be.

Esports Game of the Year

The Esports Game of the Year honours a game that has achieved significant milestones in the esports world over the past year, regardless of its release date. Over the past 12 months the game has reached a significant audience, had a well developed and stable competitive scene at all levels and vastly improved its standing in the esports space. Only the very best games have a shot at becoming an esport, and it takes constant development support to sustain that while keeping fans constantly entertained.

Award Criteria

Criteria 1:
A game on any platform that has a large and stable esports scene.

Criteria 2:
The game’s competitive scene has had an impressive year with big events and high quality entertainment.

Criteria 3:
A game with a large player base and critical acclaim.

Voting

This award is 75% voted by the panel and 25% voted by the community.

Streamer of the Year

The Streamer of the Year award honours the most distinguished streamer who has raised the standards of streaming across the globe over the past 12 months. The winner will have consistently been at the pinnacle of streaming, pushing boundaries of what is possible and providing constant entertainment for a large group of fans across the judging period.

Award Criteria

Criteria 1:
Hosted live streams throughout the last year related to video games

Criteria 2:
Built and sustained a large audience of viewers who are consistently entertained.

Criteria 3:
Innovated in the area of streaming with new ideas, technological advancements or overall quality.

Esports Play of the Year

The Esports Play of the Year honours a piece of in game skill that pushes the boundary on what is considered achievable in a title. It might be a perfectly executed plan that has never been seen before or it might be an incredible feat of reactions and control that only a top calibre player could pull off. The play of the year will have had a significant impact on the game it happened in as well as captivates the crowd. Fans vote definitively on a monthly basis to create the Play of the year shortlist, with the panel also able to enter two wildcard options to the finalists based on the plays that just missed out on the fan vote.

Award Criteria

Criteria 1:
A singular play from any esport that pushed the boundaries of what was thought to be possible.

Criteria 2:
An incredible piece of skill that had a significant impact on the overall game.

Criteria 3:
A display of skill at the top level for esports, rarely seen or executed at a professional level.

Those with a strong industry standing, high level of popularity and who have provided a large contribution to the world of esports are all notable in this category.

Criteria 1:
Someone involved with the esports industry that has built and sustained influence.

Criteria 2:
Has had a significant impact on the esports industry over the past 12 months.

Criteria 3:
Has advanced the esports world in awareness, engagement and interest.

Esports Mobile Game of the Year

Global recognition and seamless accessibility.

Esports Content Creator of the Year

Anyone who curates content whilst attracting a mass scale audience is eligible with the panel taking into account areas such as presenting style, popularity, originality, integrity, and the overall quality of the content. Whether it’s behind the scenes looks at a player’s life or a detailed analysis of an almost unnoticeable play that turned a game, great content inspires millions, and here we honor the very best creators in esports.

Award Criteria

Criteria 1:
Has created high-quality content around esports in the last year, as either a solo content creator or as a group of content creators.

Criteria 2:
Has established a large audience for the content.

Criteria 3:
Produced innovative content that brings something never seen before to the esports world.
